Loral Space & Communications owns 64% of Telesat, one of the world's largest operators of communications satellites.
Based in Ottawa, Canada, Telesat was formed by combining the global resources and expertise of two of the most successful and respected companies in the satellite industry, Loral Skynet and Telesat Canada.
Telesat's customers lease transponder capacity for distribution of video and data for television programming, direct-to-home (DTH) services, business communications, Internet connectivity and telephony. Telesat also offers communications services through Internet Protocol (IP)-based technologies, primarily for enterprise-level high-speed data services using very small aperture terminal (VSAT) networks, and for distance learning and educational television.
The new Telesat operates 11 satellites with three more to be launched by the end of the decade. Telesat offers services in every major market of the world, providing its customers with fast and easy access to state-of-the-art communications solutions.
In addition, Loral Space & Communications owns 56% of XTAR, a new satellite communications company committed to serving the needs of government customers. The company is a joint venture between Loral Space & Communications and HISDESAT. Headquartered in Rockville, Md., XTAR owns and operates the XTAR-EUR satellite and offers additional X-band capacity on XTAR-LANT, a payload on HISDESAT's SPAINSAT satellite. Together, these unique X-band satellites represent the emergence of a new offering in government communications services.
