Headquartered in New York, Loral Space & Communications (NASDAQ: LORL) is a satellite communications company engaged, through ownership interests in affiliates, in satelllite-based communications services.
Loral owns 62.8% of Telesat, a leading global satellite operator providing reliable and secure satellite-delivered communications solutions worldwide to broadcast, telecom, corporate and government customers. Headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, with offices and facilities around the world, Telesat's state-of-the-art fleet consists of 14 satellites plus the Canadian payload on ViaSat-1 with another satellite under construction. Telesat also manages the operations of additional satellites for third parties.
Loral also owns 56 percent of XTAR, a joint venture between Loral and HISDESAT, a consortium comprised of leading Spanish telecommunications companies, including Hispasat, S.A., and agencies of the Spanish government. Through its XTAR-EUR satellite, XTAR provides X-band services to government users in the United States, Spain and other allied countries, including the US Department of State, the Spanish Ministry of Defence and Danish armed forces. XTAR's headquarters are in Herndon, VA.
On November 2, 2012, Loral subsidiary, Space Systems/Loral,
was sold to MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX:
